R.I.P. Syd Barrett

I first heard of Pink Floyd when the movie Zabriskie Point came to Binghamton (they did several pieces for the soundtrack). I thought to myself, "Gee, that's an awfully weird name for a rock band".

In fact, they'd named themselves for two American bluesmen, Pink Anderson and Floyd Council.

Oh yes, when Hurricane Floyd hit the eastern seaboard a few years ago, USA Today showed a satellite image of the storm. It was rendered in computer-generated false color as with storm systems on other weather maps. The dominant color was of course, pink.

Floyd fans or not, we owe Syd a lot. Just ask Robyn Hitchcock, Tangerine Dream, and any number of other prog-rock, space-rock and "Kraut-rock" acts.
